Mobile Call Recording for BlackBerry Smartphones

Wednesday, 25th August, 2010

Mobile phone recording – are you prepared?

After a number of high profile cases involving financial institutions and their clients, the FSA are to review the need for regulated companies to record all mobile phone calls and SMS (Short Messaging Service) texts between their employees and customers.

Although financial companies commonly record calls on fixed line as part of their regulatory requirements, mobile calls and SMS texts, due to the technical complexity involved, have not.

Mobile recording will allow companies to archive voicemail, conversations and texts to assist with any disputes and complications, thus improving compliance protocol and procedure. The FSA ended their consultation period on June 14th and are expected to introduce the legislation in autumn 2010 with the major mobile networks instigating provisional platforms to carry the service.

Preventing, detecting and deterring market abuse is one of the key priorities. However, market abuse is one of the most difficult offences to investigate and prosecute. Good quality recordings of voice conversations and of electronic communications help firms and the FSA detect and deter inappropriate behaviour. Implementing a recording solution is also expected to help firms more speedily resolve any internal disputes arising from employee or indeed employer misconduct.

‘In the finance sector, the use of mobiles mobile rather than fixed line handsets has risen considerably, a result of employers introducing flexible working practices’, says Bernie Mistry, telecoms Accounts Manager.  ‘A mobile recording solution will help companies meet key compliance and risk management objectives and demonstrate the intrinsically good and bad aspects of day to day customer liaisons’.

Currently, firms have different approaches to recording telephone and electronic communications. In addition, the amount of time firms keep records for varies widely. Introducing a recording requirement may raise the standard of behaviour by those using telephone lines and means of electronic communication which will be recorded for the first time. It may also increase the quality and volume of information available in pursuing market abuse cases. To avoid infringing on privacy, recording can be activated during working hours and also be number specific.  Self management as well as

Although the FSA have been instrumental in bringing the necessity of mobile recording to the public domain, the likelihood of other business sectors adopting a similar policy is inevitable.  As mobile communications become ever more dominant in decision making, recording of all activity makes perfect sense.

Below: wording for ‘boxed’ space

The benefits of mobile phone recording:

  • Records and stores voice calls and SMS on your existing recording infrastructure
  • Automatic recording, with no user intervention required
  • User-friendly – aids enhance user acceptance
  • Employees keep existing mobile numbers
  • Compatible with major device platforms – re-use existing assets
  • Compatible with Roaming
  • Global, managed solution with uniform global deployment
  • Enables out-of-office/out-of-hours trading
  • Enables certain calls to proceed without recording, for example calls to/from employees’ home numbers
  • Discourages employees from carrying a second ‘personal’ phone

Having trialled a white labelled product, I found the facility to be of immense use with the retrieval of data being particularly useful. I suppose one way of looking at this aspect would be to imagine a diarised account of all your mobile communications.

The provider aligned the service with my Blackberry 9700 via the BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) operating platform (Android, Linux, Google and Windows users will not have an issue with a recording facility, but double check with your provider as to best option). Hours of recording were set from 9am to 6pm and I omitted personal numbers from the set up so as to make sure that all my calls and texts were business orientated. I was able to go on line via a secure server to access and review all my mobile correspondence, immediately after a call or text had been made or sent. Access to the on line element can obviously be restricted, but I advise liaising with HR departments on this as to what specific company policy is regarding employee privacy and as to how long records should be kept. This can vary from 1 hour up to 3 years.

The information stored was also available in a preferred audio format, WAV or MP3, and SMS texts were collated as a simple print friendly log entry as originally sent, including grammatical errors and predictive text. So watch out for your spelling!

At present, the service I was using could not support recording MMS (Multi Media Service) content, such as attachments and images, only a record of date, time and recipient could be stored. Over the course of a week I made just over 120 business correspondences with 35 being SMS and the rest being calls. The service was 100% efficient, working within the parameters that were set, backed by a full technical and support service. This, partnered with a user friendly web based ‘records’ centre, only adds to the appeal of the mobile recording solution.

In the first instance, procurement directors and managers should approach their network providers direct and discuss possible options. Those working in the finance sector will no doubt receive, in due course, information from the FSA outlining the results of the consultation period undertaken earlier this year. It is possible (at time of writing) to review the FSA’s review of removing the exemptions regarding mobile recording by visiting http://www.fsa.gov.uk

The nonintrusive aspect and ease of use will make the procurement process a simple task, without the need to change existing communications platforms, thus a non disruptive and smooth introduction can be made. And, with the ever progressing innovation in the telecoms market, recording facilities will evolve to monitor all capabilities of Smartphone’s and handsets, from web browsing and downloads to media and data usage.

Blackberry Pearl 3G

The Pearl 3G has a 3.2 megapixel camera, a considerable upgrade from the original Pearl's 2MP camera. It also has an optical trackpad, rather than the trackball, which was the common navigation tool on old Blackberries.

It uses GPS, enabling Blackberry maps, as well as Wi-Fi and 3G networks.

Android touting Acer Stream announced

Announcements of new Android handsets are coming thick and fast, we’ve had the HTC Wildfire, Samsung Galaxy S and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini to name three of the most recent.

As far as specs go, here’s what we know: It’ll launch with Android 2.1 (éclair), it will also have a 3.7 Inch AMOLED display with a 2000:1 contrast ratio which without going into the gory details, is very good. There’s also a Qualcomm SnapDragon 1GHz processor lurking under the hood joined by 512MB of RAM which will take care of any day to day tasks without breaking sweat.

Specs, pics and thoughts on Dell’s 4 new superphones

With so many companies making top-end smartphones, you’d think the last thing the market needed was yet another company jumping on the bandwagon.

The Dell smartphones are currently in concept stage. with The Dell Lightning release date set for Q3 2010, which means it’ll be one of the first Windows 7 Phones on the market. The Dell Thunder, Flash and Smoke will also be released at the same time, with LTE versions (i.e. 4G versions!) released early in 2011

Samsung i8910 Omnia HD Review: the smartest feature phone around

The Samsung i8910 Omnia HD in this review is a superb combination of high-end feature phone and slick touchscreen smartphone. If you demand the very best features from your phone, but you don’t want to lose the ease of use of a touchscreen, the Omnia HD is quite possibly the only phone you need to consider.

At its heart, the Omnia HD is all about video – and high-def video at that. Capable of recording and playing HD video at 720p, the Omnia HD gives you the best quality video of any mobile phone on the market, and shows it off in superb style with a super-clear 16 million colour AMOLED screen.

Vodafone launches Sure Signal 3G Booster‎

Tuesday, 2nd March, 2010

SimpleGetFileServlet

Originally launched as Vodafone Access Gateway in July last year, the Sure Signal allows users to boost the 3G mobile network in their home, giving better mobile coverage and even access to mobile broadband services.

The Sure Signal can be used with any home broadband connection receiving at least 1Mb downloads, plugging into the line to give more reliable coverage for all 3G handsets and dongles.

“Customers no longer need to worry about missed calls on their mobiles due to inconsistent indoor coverage and will be able to take advantage of the full range of Vodafone services via their handset anywhere in the home or office,” said the ISP.

“No other network in the UK can ensure a great mobile phone signal in the home, because the Sure Signal is unique to Vodafone,” added Guy Laurence, Vodafone UK CEO. “Customers tell us it is life changing. If they live or work in a basement for example, the only way they may be able to get consistent mobile coverage could be with a Vodafone Sure Signal.”

Research by Vodafone found that one in five Brits had have missed an important event or occasion because of a lack of signal, while 1 in 50 would even consider moving house for better indoor coverage.

Up to 32 people can be registered to use a Sure Signal and four people can be connected at any one time.

Prices start at £50 one-off cost or £5 a month for 12 months on price plans of £25 or more. Customers on tariffs costing less than £25 a month can get the Sure Signal for a one-off cost of £120, or £5 a month for 24 months.

Michael Phillips, Broadbandchoices.co.uk product director, said: “While the Sure Signal can make a huge difference to mobile phone users suffering from poor coverage in their home, mobile broadband customers shouldn’t rush out to buy one, since you need a reliable home broadband connection in order to use it - so you wouldn’t need mobile broadband at home anyway".

“However, there are steps you can take to improve your mobile broadband signal,” he added. “Try adding an antenna extension, ditching your mobile broadband router or investing in a signal repeater if you really have no other broadband options.”
